The spelling sweep made every word American; the vocabulary and phrasing were still British in many places. A reading pass over all repositories confirmed about 650 such places, and this pull request is this repository's share. Dates are left as they are, by the owner's decision.

What changed

  • Phrases British in every sense, replaced by the workspace checker: for ever → forever, half way → halfway, straight away → right away, the other way round → the other way around, a fortnight → two weeks.
  • Phrases that depend on the sense, rewritten by hand: any more meaning "any longer" → anymore; mark for a score → score or grade; tick for a checkbox → check; stop somebody doing → stop somebody from doing; take a decision → make a decision; has got → has gotten; onwards → on; lecturer → instructor. The same words in their other senses stay: the verb mark, a clock's tick, a contest's round, the verb forwards.

Verified

  • scripts/check-repository.py, and bash -n on every script.
  • An adversarial reviewer read every hunk and fixed what read badly.

Not covered

  • The stack was not started; only comments, documentation and printed messages changed.

The spelling sweep left British vocabulary and phrasing behind: "for ever",
"any more" for "any longer", "mark" for a score, "tick" for a checkbox, "stop
somebody doing", "take a decision", "has got", "onwards", "round". They are
replaced where the sense is British. Dates are left as they are.
