P2: impact and application framing (AUTH-01): sensors as monitors of internal rheology and deformation #40

Description

@mdenolle

Package P2 of the iteration-3 plan: the author's request AUTH-01. Owner: author with an agent drafting. Size: days. Editorial decisions are the author's; the C4 evidence check applies to every new sentence. Depends on #38.

The brief (Marine Denolle, 2026-09-11): state the impact more strongly. Repurposing seismic sensors to monitor internal rheology and deformation is hard and important, and the applications reach beyond the four monitoring targets named now. Broaden with the engineering and experimental coda-wave literature: concrete, laboratory rock physics, composites, and, if studies exist, dams and timber.

  • Introduction. One paragraph stating the impact directly: what it means to turn a passive sensor network into a monitor of internal rheology and deformation, why it is hard (a small relative change buried in processing choices), and why choice accounting plus a calibrated covariance is what makes such a monitor trustworthy.
  • Application breadth. A paragraph connecting the same measurement to engineering and experimental CWI, with references the author has read and verified (DOIs resolved). Candidates from a 2026-09-11 search: Planes and Larose 2013, review of ultrasonic CWI in concrete (Cement and Concrete Research); Schurr et al. 2011, damage detection in concrete (NDT&E International); Niederleithinger et al. 2018, load tests of concrete beams (Sensors 18, 1971, doi 10.3390/s18061971); the 2021 Materials virtual-concrete-lab and reinforced-specimen studies; the 2020 Sensors acoustoelastic-modulus study; the 2024 International Journal of Mechanical Sciences thermo-acoustoelastic study; Gret et al. 2006, in situ mine stress (Geophysics); Singh et al. 2019, experimental rock physics (JGR Solid Earth, doi 10.1029/2019JB017577); the 2017 Materials composites study. Already cited and relevant: Snieder et al. 2002, Hadziioannou et al. 2009, Weaver et al. 2011, Zotz-Wilson et al. 2019, Olivier et al. 2017, Ouellet et al. 2022, Planes et al. 2016.
  • Gaps to state or search further. The search found no timber or wood CWI study and no direct concrete-dam CWI study (dam monitoring appears only as a stated possibility in Snieder et al. 2002). Decide: search engineering venues (Structural Health Monitoring, NDT&E International, Construction and Building Materials) or name these as open applications.
  • Discussion and Conclusions. Carry the strengthened statement through, within what the results show; the calibration limits stay as stated.
  • Update the survey CSV only if a new reference is a dv/v study that belongs in Appendix C (then P4 rules apply).

Acceptance: every new claim traces to a cited, verified source or to a result in the paper; the reviewer's C4 and C7 checks in P7 pass on the new spans.

Working agreement (agents and humans). One PR per issue, branch iter3/<package> off docs/sign-convention-manuscript; name the ledger IDs in the PR title; request Copilot review before approval. Do not edit review/REVISION_PLAN_ITER3.md except to tick boxes and append a dated log line naming this issue. Do not hand-edit statuses in reviews/codameter-gji.review.json; the reviewer reconciles them in P7. Tests and pre-commit hooks must pass. Before requesting review, rebuild the PDF (cd paper && ../.pixi/envs/dev/bin/python build.py --no-survey) and check its text for ??, ,%, << and [Funding. Evidence for every finding: reviews/iter2/block_S-*.md; full report reviews/codameter-gji.iter2.report.md; plan review/REVISION_PLAN_ITER3.md.
