ABI Versions

The current ABI versions are now v12.19.0 and v13.12.0 and v14.0.0.

ABI v14

ABI v14 has been added as an experimental ABI. Bindings that target this ABI can support multiple interpreters and free-threading. Python v3.15 or later is required.

Typing improvements

• __buffer__() and __release_buffer__() are now generated as part of a class definition in a .pyi file where appropriate.

sipbuild Module

get_limited_abi_version() was added to the Project class to give a project complete control over the version of the Python ABI to be targeted.

Support for PEP 803

Support was added for the stable ABI in free-thread builds (PEP 803). The Py_TARGET_ABI3T C preprocessor macro is defined and the abi3.abi3t composite wheel tag is used when appropriate.

Improved pickle support

The format used to pickle wrapped types has been changed to be more robust and faster. Pickles using the legacy format can still be read but the new format will be used if they are rewritten. All ABI versions can read the new format.

/Factory/ not supported for non-pointers

The /Factory/ annotation is not intended to be used for callables that return non-pointers. This is now enforced and will result in a build-time error.

Improved support for /Movable/

The /Movable/ mapped type annotation is properly supported when an instance is returned by a Python reimplemention of a virtual.

It is now a build error when it is known that a mapped type needs to be copied and there is no assignment operator available.
