Summary

mutmut run exits 0 however many mutants survive (verified on 3.7.0, and again on 3.8.0 after #208). So mutation.yml has been green whatever it found. The two accepted survivors were recorded only in a pyproject.toml comment that nothing checked. A local run showed what that cost: a third survivor, in the shared TLV walker, had gone untriaged and unkilled.

This is the QA groundwork for upcoming HTTP/1.1 codec work, but it is independent of HTTP and also repairs the existing DNS/checksum/TLV audit.

What's included

  • scripts/check_mutmut_survivors.py is a new final step in mutation.yml. It reads mutmut results --all true. The job fails on any of:

    • an undetected mutant that isn't in the new triage record, scripts/mutmut_survivors.txt;
    • a stale entry in that record;
    • an only_mutate file with no checked mutant at all.

Unknown mutmut statuses fail closed. The two accepted survivors and their reasoning moved into the record.

  • tests/test_tlv.py kills the third survivor: walk_kind_length_value discarded a caller's min_option_length when the length byte counts its own header.

  • tests/conftest.py now:

    • clears every package-level functools cache before each test. mutmut forks each mutant from a parent that has already run the suite, so a warm DNS cache could hide a mutant.
    • loads the Hypothesis profiles for every test selection. mutmut's selection never imported test_fuzz.py, where they were registered.
  • fuzz.yml / mutation.yml key their concurrency group on the triggering event, so the cron can't cancel a manual run.

  • CONTRIBUTING.md gains Mutation testing and Releasing sections. Before tagging, dispatch both nightly jobs and require them green.

  • tests/test_workflows.py guards each of the above. It also checks that every tests/fuzz/*.py harness is run.

  • pyproject.toml's mutmut comment now notes that decorated functions (the @lru_cache DNS parsers) are never mutated.

Verification

  • uv run ruff check and uv run ruff format --check are clean
  • uv run mypy is clean (strict)
  • uv run pytest passes locally (99.95% coverage)
  • CHANGELOG.md has an entry under ## [Unreleased]

Gate checked against a real run on mutmut 3.8.0: 499 mutants checked, exactly the two triaged survivors, exit 0. With an empty allowlist it fails, naming both survivors.

Notes

Pre-existing and out of scope here: coverage counts 2,055 statements, while pyproject.toml and docs/CLAIMS.md still say 2,052. src/ is unchanged by this PR.

`mutmut run` (3.7.0, pinned) exits 0 however many mutants survive, so
mutation.yml was green whatever it found, and the two accepted
survivors lived in a pyproject.toml comment nothing checked. Running
the audit locally showed the cost: a third survivor in the shared TLV
walker had gone untriaged and unkilled.

- scripts/check_mutmut_survivors.py fails the job on any undetected
mutant not accepted in scripts/mutmut_survivors.txt, on a stale
entry, and on a scoped file with no checked mutant at all; unknown
statuses fail closed. Verified against a real run: passes with the
record, fails on both survivors without it.
- tests/test_tlv.py kills the third survivor (a caller's
min_option_length discarded when the length counts its header).
- tests/conftest.py clears every package-level functools cache before
each test, and loads the Hypothesis profiles for every selection.
mutmut 3 forks each mutant from a parent that already ran the suite,
so a warm cache could hide a mutant; and mutmut's test selection
never imported test_fuzz.py, where the profiles were registered.
- fuzz.yml/mutation.yml key concurrency on the event, so the cron can't
cancel the manual runs CONTRIBUTING.md's new release checklist needs.
- tests/test_workflows.py guards each of these, plus every fuzz harness
  being run.

#208 bumped mutmut 3.7.0 -> 3.8.0 after the survivor gate was written.
Re-verified on 3.8.0: `mutmut run` still exits 0 with mutants
surviving, the status vocabulary is unchanged, and the two triaged
survivors keep their names, so the gate passes as before. One
behaviour did change: 3.8.0 recurses into decorated classes, so
@DataClass methods are mutated again. The earlier "correction" of
pyproject.toml's comment would have made it false, so the wording now
says only that decorated functions (the @lru_cache parsers) are never
mutated.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The pull request adds a mutation-survivor checker and triage record, updates test profile and cache setup, adds TLV boundary tests, and changes fuzz and mutation workflow concurrency and validation.

Changes

Mutation audit and test workflows

Layer / File(s) Summary
Test profiles and per-test state
tests/conftest.py, tests/test_fuzz.py, tests/test_dns.py, tests/test_tlv.py, CHANGELOG.md
Hypothesis profiles now load from conftest.py, and package caches are cleared before each test. DNS cache-state and TLV minimum-length tests are added.
Survivor checker and triage
scripts/check_mutmut_survivors.py, scripts/mutmut_survivors.txt, tests/test_mutmut_gate.py, pyproject.toml, CONTRIBUTING.md, tests/test_tlv.py, CHANGELOG.md
The checker validates mutation results against the triage record and configured mutation scopes. Tests cover parsing, survivor status, allowlist entries, scope coverage, and CLI outcomes.
Workflow integration and release guidance
.github/workflows/fuzz.yml, .github/workflows/mutation.yml, .gitignore, tests/test_workflows.py, CONTRIBUTING.md, CHANGELOG.md
Workflow concurrency keys include the triggering event. The mutation job saves results and runs the checker; workflow tests validate harness coverage and gate ordering. Contributor guidance describes mutation audits and release runs.

The nightly mutation gate can pass an allowlisted mutant with an unknown status. Fix the status check before relying on the gate; the risk is narrow and does not otherwise block the workflow.

Comment thread scripts/check_mutmut_survivors.py
An allowlisted mutant whose status turned into `no tests`, `suspicious`
or a status a newer mutmut introduces was still subtracted from the
undetected set, so the gate passed despite promising to fail closed
(CodeRabbit, #213). The record exists to accept equivalent survivors,
so it now suppresses status `survived` and nothing else; any other
undetected status is reported once, allowlisted or not.
