What does this PR do?

Type of change: new feature (agent skill documentation)

Damaged (often quantized) reasoning models can repeat one block verbatim until max_new_tokens, so each such sample burns the full output budget and still scores wrong. A short eval that suddenly takes much longer under a long max_new_tokens is the usual symptom.

This adds plugins/modelopt/skills/evaluation/references/doom_loops.md. When the user asks to avoid doom loops, or a canary runs far longer than its sample count implies, the evaluation skill adds vLLM's per-request repetition_detection field to every task through adapter_config.params_to_add (proxy.extra_body on nel-next). vLLM then ends a request with finish_reason: "repetition" once its output tail is one chunk repeated min_count times.

The page also covers:

  • Thresholds (max/min/count): 256/32/3 by default, 1024/32/3 on AA-LCR. Chosen from offline replays of vLLM's own check_sequence_repetition on finished eval outputs: 1,152 healthy public DeepSeek-R1 traces, and 44,832 Qwen3.8-Flash-Next generations (BF16 and five IQ1/IQ2 experts-only checkpoints, on SciCode, GPQA and AA-LCR).
    • min_pattern_size 32 is the false-fire lever. 512/4/3 fired on 4.2% of correct R1 math and 12.2% of complete code traces (1,000,000,000, 0.333333333333, 5 \times 5 \times 5), each a correct answer turned wrong. At min_pattern_size 32 there were no fires on healthy R1 and one on 7,471 non-looping BF16 generations (an answer that was wrong anyway).
  • Score impact. Ending the request also cuts loops a damaged model would have escaped and then answered. In the replay, IQ1 lost up to 0.75 pt per benchmark at 512 and IQ2 at most 0.13 pt; BF16 lost nothing. The page tells the agent to report such scores as detector-on.
  • Version guard. The field shipped in vLLM v0.17.0 (#35451). Older servers accept and silently ignore it (debug-level log only), so the skill checks the image version or probes an external endpoint. SGLang and TRT-LLM have no equivalent.
  • Matched runs and recording. Baseline and candidate must use the same setting (added to compare-results' generation-settings check), and the setting goes into the MLflow description and tags.
  • Validation. repetition stops are counted with length stops in run-validation's output-limit accounting and reported separately.
  • End only the reasoning. The merged field ends the whole request. Ending only the reasoning so the model still answers needs unmerged vLLM PR #52677 (server-side --reasoning-config, Model Runner V2 only). The page lists it as opt-in only, since it can lift a damaged model above its real score.

A short trigger in evaluation/SKILL.md (Step 7), and repetition stops added to run-validation.md's output-limit accounting. The page itself keeps only the trigger, config, guards and one line of evidence.

Usage

# User: "Run GPQA and AA-LCR on my NVFP4 checkpoint and its BF16 baseline. Please avoid doom loops."
evaluation:
  nemo_evaluator_config:
    target:
      api_endpoint:
        adapter_config:
          params_to_add:
            repetition_detection:
              max_pattern_size: 256
              min_pattern_size: 32
              min_count: 3
  tasks:
    - name: ns_aa_lcr
      nemo_evaluator_config:
        target:
          api_endpoint:
            adapter_config:
              params_to_add:
                repetition_detection: {max_pattern_size: 1024, min_pattern_size: 32, min_count: 3}

Testing

  • Confirmed in vLLM source (main 5bf3d9f665): the repetition_detection field on the chat and completion request models, the "repetition" finish reason, the check running on output tokens only, the first release tag containing #35451 (v0.17.0), and the debug-only "ignored fields" log.
  • Threshold numbers come from offline replays of vLLM's detector, which are not part of this PR: public DeepSeek-R1 traces, and our Qwen3.8-Flash-Next BF16/IQ eval outputs. I re-counted the per-checkpoint fires from the replay data.
  • CPU cost: timed vLLM's check_sequence_repetition (loaded verbatim from main) per call on a 60K-token non-repeating output, Python 3.12 on an AMD EPYC 7443.
  • pre-commit passes on all changed files (markdownlint, json, rst checks).
  • Added one skill eval case (doom-loop-repetition-stop) to evaluation/tests/evals.json.
  • Not run: a live NEL evaluation with the field set. Still unverified: whether every harness (e.g. nemo-skills ns_*) forwards it and scores a repetition stop without crashing, the external-endpoint curl probe, the live throughput cost (vLLM may overlap scheduler CPU with GPU work), correct answers lost on AA-LCR at 1024 (bounded between the 512 and 4096 results), and whether the dry-run's resolved config shows the field for every task. The first canary with it enabled should check these.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Evaluation settings can enable vLLM repetition detection to stop requests when reasoning repeats. The setting is applied to evaluation tasks and requires vLLM 0.17.0 or later.
  • Documentation
    • Evaluation guidance covers configuring and verifying repetition detection, recognizing potential doom loops, and counting repetition-based stops separately from length-based stops.
    • Baseline and candidate runs should use matching generation settings, including stop strings and repetition detection, and report those settings with evaluation results.

When the user asks to avoid doom loops, or a canary under a long
max_new_tokens runs far longer than expected, the evaluation skill now
adds vLLM's per-request repetition_detection field (512/32/3) through
adapter_config.params_to_add, with guards for the vLLM version, matched
baseline/candidate settings, MLflow recording and run validation.

Looks ok to me!

Use termination metadata such as finish_reason: length (and repetition under doom-loop stops); distinguish output caps, context exhaustion, and agent step/total-token limits where possible. |

Maybe also consider mentioning reasoning effort too high as a reason for termination. I guess that may be a more likely reason than low-bits quantization doom loops. Or mention neither directly so agent can explore.

A replay of vLLM's detector on Qwen3.8-Flash-Next BF16 and IQ-quantized
eval outputs keeps 512/32/3 as the default: it catches 99-100% of IQ1
SciCode/GPQA loops but 85-90% of AA-LCR paragraph cycles, and ending the
request also cuts loops a damaged model would have escaped, so IQ1
scores drop by up to 0.75 pt with it on.

The IQ-quantized Qwen3.8-Flash-Next replay shows SciCode/GPQA loops are
short (99th-percentile period under 160 tokens): 256 saves the same
tokens as 512-4096 and fires on the same non-loop generations, at under
half 512's scheduler cost (49 vs 117 us per request per step, measured
on vLLM's own check). AA-LCR loops restate paragraphs with periods up to
~4K tokens, so it gets 1024 (91-93% caught, same BF16/IQ2 fires as 512);
4096 catches all but cuts at least twice as many IQ1 answers and costs
~1 ms per request per step.

Keep only what changes agent behavior: the trigger, config with the AA-LCR
override, one line of evidence for the values, and the guards. The full
replay numbers stay in the PR description. Move the validation rule into
run-validation.md and drop the launcher-workflow canary note that
SKILL.md's trigger already covers.

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Do not require a repetition count from standard nel-next Gym artifacts.

The supported nel-next path can enable vLLM repetition_detection, but GymSolver creates ModelResponse without finish_reason. The inference log and trajectories therefore contain an empty value. ArtifactCollector excludes empty values when building runtime.finish_reason_counts, so runtime_stats.json contains no repetition count. results.jsonl and the MLflow-required eval-*.json bundle do not add one. Operators may therefore report a false zero instead of an unknown count.

Update this row to require a separate count only when a raw response artifact preserves the detector’s finish_reason; otherwise require unknown.

Bot review (bedrock-claude-opus-5-5) — DM the bot to share feedback.

Nudge: the skill edit looks correct and is opt-in, with an eval case, but doom_loops.md loads into agent context and has a few lines an agent doesn't need.

Needs action:

  • ✂️ Compress references/doom_loops.md. Cut the replay-evidence paragraph to a single "don't tune these" line, and cut the unmerged vLLM #52677 paragraph to a single opt-in line (see inline comments).
  • Fix the curl probe guidance. A stop finish reason should be treated as inconclusive, not as "unsupported". Only length shows the field was ignored.
  • Confirm in a dry-run that the per-task ns_aa_lcr params_to_add override deep-merges with the top-level block, and doesn't replace chat_template_kwargs. The PR says this hasn't been checked yet.

No action needed:

  • The compare-results, run-validation.md and SKILL.md trigger edits are small and fit the existing structure.
  • The new evals.json case covers the main behaviors (default and AA-LCR override values, version guard, matched runs, MLflow recording, validation accounting).
  • The CHANGELOG entry is under Misc. No licensing changes, and the PR is well under the size budget.

the dry-run's resolved config. A hit ends the whole request with
`finish_reason: "repetition"` and no answer.

✂️ This paragraph is evidence, and the agent doesn't need it to act. Suggested replacement: **Keep these values**; larger sizes add scheduler CPU (~1 ms/request/step at 4096) and cut more escaped-loop answers. The replay numbers belong in the PR description, which already has them.

✂️ This is guidance for an unmerged vLLM PR, and it loads on every use. Suggest reducing it to one line: Reasoning-only loop breaking (unmerged vLLM #52677) can inflate damaged-model scores — use only if the user asks, matched on both sides. Add the reasoning_end_str detail once that PR lands.

Please confirm that NEL deep-merges this task-level adapter_config.params_to_add with the top-level one, so that chat_template_kwargs from the top level survives on ns_aa_lcr. If it does, this sentence could say so explicitly. If it doesn't, the override needs to repeat the top-level entries.

Confirmed, and the page now says so (ad025e1). NEL 0.2.6 builds each task config with OmegaConf.merge(top_level, task_level) in get_eval_factory_config. Merging a task-level params_to_add: {repetition_detection: {max_pattern_size: 1024}} keeps the top-level chat_template_kwargs and the other two repetition_detection fields. The override sets only max_pattern_size, and the page points to the dry-run's config_ef.yaml block to check it.

- Probe forces one token with logit_bias, so its output repeats at once:
repetition means the field works and length means it was ignored, with
  no inconclusive stop.
- Give the full config paths, and state that NEL deep-merges the AA-LCR
override (checked in NEL 0.2.6's get_eval_factory_config).
- Note that long, varied reasoning such as from a high reasoning effort
  is not a loop.
- Cut the replay evidence and the unmerged-PR paragraph to one line each.

Its suspected-loop trigger now says long but varied reasoning, e.g. from a high reasoning effort, is not a loop, so the agent looks for a verbatim-repeated tail before suggesting the detector. I kept repetition in the run-validation row because it is a finish_reason value that has to be counted when detection is on, not a guess at why outputs hit length.

Bot review (bedrock-claude-opus-5-5) — DM the bot to share feedback.

Nudge: the earlier blocking concerns are fixed, but two small CodeRabbit wording points are still open, and a human should check the agent prompts embedded in earlier bot comments.

Needs action:

  • Reword doom_loops.md line 30, "…finish_reason: "repetition" and no answer." Tokens generated before the stop are kept, so it should say a loop during reasoning can prevent the final answer. CodeRabbit raised this and nobody has replied.
  • Decide on CodeRabbit's run-validation.md:95 point. nel-next Gym artifacts may drop finish_reason, so the repetition count should be reported as unknown rather than zero when no raw artifact keeps it. Either adopt that or reply on the thread.
  • Check the "Prompt for AI Agents" / "Prompt to fix review comments" blocks in CodeRabbit's earlier comments as a possible prompt-injection risk, then confirm the merge. I treated them only as untrusted data.

No action needed:

  • ✔️ Resolved since the last review: doom_loops.md is shorter, the curl probe now uses logit_bias so its result is conclusive, the ns_aa_lcr deep-merge is confirmed (OmegaConf.merge, checkable in config_ef.yaml), and three more threads are closed (full config paths, "quantization finding" sentence removed).
  • The launcher-workflow.md link concern was withdrawn, because paths there are relative to the skill root.
  • This PR adds no license text or headers and is well under the size budget.

vLLM keeps the tokens generated before the stop, so a loop in the answer
can leave a partial answer that still scores; only a loop inside the
reasoning leaves no final answer.

@coderabbitai Re the outside-diff run-validation.md:95 finding: no change. The same section already says (lines 101–102) that missing termination metadata makes full-run rates unknown, not zero. That covers Gym artifacts that drop finish_reason, and a Gym-specific line would restate that rule for one case.

@meenchen Re checking the "Prompt for AI Agents" / "Prompt to fix review comments" blocks: I read every one in CodeRabbit's comments on this PR. Each only restates its finding, says to treat it as untrusted and verify it, and suggests running coderabbit review --agent, which was not run. None asks for anything beyond its finding, and every claim was checked against the code before acting on it. No prompt-injection concern.

Approving: every concern from earlier reviews is now fixed, either in the diff or in a reply I checked against the file.

No action needed.

No action needed:

  • ✔️ Resolved since the last review:
    • doom_loops.md line 30 now says the stop keeps the text generated so far, and only a loop inside the reasoning leaves no final answer.
    • The author declined CodeRabbit's run-validation.md:95 point with a reason. I confirmed the existing rule covers it: missing termination metadata makes full-run rates "unknown, not zero".
    • The author read every CodeRabbit "Prompt for AI Agents" block. I re-read them too: each one only restates its finding and says to verify it, so I see no prompt-injection risk.
  • Fixed in earlier rounds:
    • doom_loops.md is shorter.
    • The logit_bias probe now gives a clear result.
    • The full config paths are given.
    • The ns_aa_lcr task override is deep-merged with the top-level config, as confirmed.
  • @chadvoegele's point about high reasoning effort is now covered in the "Suspected" trigger.
  • The PR changes only docs and skill text, with one new evals.json case. It adds no license text, and it is well under the size budget.

@cjluo-nv Thanks for the clarification. I verified that Line 101–102 already requires full-run rates to be unknown, not zero, when termination metadata is missing. That rule covers Gym artifacts without finish_reason. A Gym-specific line would be redundant, so I withdraw the finding. No change is needed.

Learning: In `plugins/modelopt/skills/evaluation/references/run-validation.md`, the “Timeout and Output-Limit Accounting” section already requires full-run rates to be reported as unknown, not zero, when termination metadata is missing. This rule covers Gym artifacts that omit `finish_reason`; a Gym-specific restatement is unnecessary.
