💻 My Journey: From Retail to Programming

🏫 2023–2024 | High School – Finding My Direction

Throughout high school, one of my biggest goals was to get a job working in retail.

I spent a lot of time searching for jobs, submitting applications and hoping to get an opportunity to work in a store.

At the time, I wasn’t entirely sure what career I wanted to pursue, but I had also started developing an interest in technology.

After graduating from high school in October 2024, I decided to explore opportunities in the IT industry.

🛒 2025 | My First Retail Job & Discovering Programming

In 2025, I finally achieved one of my high school goals when I got a job at Kmart.

However, after gaining experience in retail, I realised that it wasn’t the right career path for me.

Although things didn’t work out exactly as I’d hoped, the experience taught me valuable lessons about workplace expectations, communication and finding a career that suits my interests and strengths.

Meanwhile, my interest in technology continued growing.

In June 2025, I completed my Certificate III in Information Technology and continued my education by enrolling in a Diploma of Web Development at TAFE Queensland.

I began learning more about programming, website development and building interactive applications.

🚀 2026 | Developing My Programming Skills

Throughout 2026, I’ve made significant progress in my programming journey.

I started the year building smaller applications, learning from tutorials and exploring other developers’ projects on GitHub.

Over time, I became more confident adapting existing code, debugging errors, understanding programming concepts and developing my own solutions.

Some of the technologies I’ve worked with include:

  • Frontend: HTML, CSS, JavaScript, React, Tailwind CSS and DaisyUI
  • Backend: Node.js, Express.js and REST APIs
  • Databases: MySQL
  • Other Languages: Python, C# and TypeScript
  • Tools: Git, GitHub, VS Code and Swagger

One of my biggest projects has been High Street Gym, a full-stack web application featuring user authentication, role-based access control, session bookings, database integration and a React frontend.

I’ve also worked on smaller projects, including games, utilities and applications to strengthen my programming skills.

Not everything has been straightforward. I’ve faced challenging assignments, debugging problems and setbacks throughout my studies.

However, these experiences have helped me become a better problem-solver and a more confident developer.

Looking back at the basic HTML and CSS websites I built in 2025 compared to the full-stack applications I’m developing today, I’m proud of how much I’ve learned.

🎯 2027 | My Next Chapter

My goal for 2027 is to begin my career as an entry-level web developer.

I’m looking forward to working alongside experienced developers, contributing to real-world projects and continuing to improve my skills.

I understand that programming is a field where there’s always something new to learn, and I’m excited about the opportunities ahead.

🌟 What I’ve Learned

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that the career you originally wanted isn’t necessarily the career you’ll end up enjoying.

For years, I wanted to work in a shop.

Today, I’m working towards a career where I can create websites, develop applications and solve problems through code.

From wanting to work in retail to pursuing a career in software development — my journey is only just beginning! 🚀
