Problem. GATECHA_RATE_LIMIT_API (60/min) applied per IP to all of /api/v1/*. /verify is called by site backends, and on shared hosting many sites post from the same outbound IP: together they shared 60 verifications a minute, then all got 429 and fell back to their failure mode. A blocker for a shared instance serving many WordPress sites.

Fix.

  • /verify: new SourceAndKeyRateLimitMiddleware, after APIKeyMiddleware, bucket = client IP + key ID. Each site gets the full budget from a shared IP; an unknown key is refused (401) before it can open a bucket.
  • /challenge (browsers) and /stats: plain per-IP budget, as before.
  • Per-key RateLimitPerMin: unchanged, one instance still shared by challenge and verify.
  • README: GATECHA_RATE_LIMIT_API row updated.

Tests (router level, limiter on, budget 3): two keys on one IP each get their budget and the 4th request of one is 429 while the other passes; another IP is unaffected; challenges stay per IP across keys and do not consume the verify budget; unknown keys get 401, never 429. Full suite green.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Behavior Updates

    • Rate limits for challenge and statistics requests are now applied per IP address.
    • Verification requests are rate-limited per IP address and API key, so limits are tracked separately for each combination.
    • Requests with an invalid API key continue to receive an authentication error before rate limiting is applied.
  • Documentation

    • Clarified the rate-limit settings to reflect the different rules for challenge, statistics, and verification endpoints.

/verify is called by site backends, and on shared hosting many sites post
from one outbound IP. The single per-IP bucket on /api/v1/* made them share
60 requests a minute: past that, every site on the host got 429 and fell
back to its failure mode.

/verify now counts the budget per (IP, API key), after authentication, so
each site gets the full budget from a shared IP and an unknown key cannot
open a bucket. /challenge (browsers) and /stats keep the plain per-IP
budget. The per-key RateLimitPerMin is unchanged and still shared by
challenge and verify.

Walkthrough

The API router now applies rate limits by endpoint. Challenge and stats requests use IP-based limits. Verification requests use limits keyed by client IP and API key after authentication. Tests cover the limits and authentication order.

Changes: Endpoint Rate Limiting

Layer / File(s) Summary
Source-and-key limiter
internal/api/ratelimit.go
The new middleware selects a bucket using the client IP and, when present in request context, the API key ID. It returns JSON 429 with "rate limit exceeded" when the bucket is exhausted.
Endpoint routing and validation
internal/api/router.go, internal/api/ratelimit_test.go, README.md
Challenge and stats routes use the configured IP limit. Verification authenticates the API key before applying the configured source-and-key limit. Challenge and verification also use a shared per-key limiter. Tests cover limit isolation and unknown-key responses. The README documents the endpoint-specific limits.

Unknown-key traffic can impose unbounded authentication database work despite the configured verify limit. Bound failed-key attempts before merging unless that exposure is explicitly accepted.

Comment thread internal/api/router.go
Moving /verify's limiter after authentication left made-up keys unthrottled,
each one a database lookup. A pre-auth limiter now counts, per IP, only the
requests that end in 401: past the budget the IP gets 429 before any lookup,
and requests with a valid key never draw on it. Raised in review.
