The Popular Threads box showed the same eight threads on every refresh, only reordered.

It revealed as soon as eight boards had loaded. useCommunities hydrates boards in sorted key order, and cached boards come back from IndexedDB in that order, so the first eight to arrive were always the same boards (on a warm reload: /wsg/, /o/, /n/, /vst/, /qst/, /xs/, /mlp/, /sci/). The per-load shuffle only changed which of those came first. Each board also had an equal chance, so boards whose best thread had no replies for months (/vmg/, /w/) could appear while /g/ and /v/ were left out.

Changes

  • The box waits for the boards, ranks each board's best thread by the existing time-decayed popularity score, and samples eight from the top sixteen on each page load, shown most popular first. One thread per board and the media de-duplication are unchanged.
  • Once eight threads are available, boards still loading after 8 s no longer hold the box back (the 30 s timeout still applies while fewer than eight are available).
  • The revealed set stays frozen during navigation and background updates, as before.

Trade-off: the box now appears when the boards have loaded rather than after the first eight, at about 3.6 s on a warm reload (0.9 s before) and 4.2–4.5 s on a cold one, measured unthrottled on a fast Mac. The loading state already reserves the box's space. Most of the warm time is the hooks library hydrating 53 cached boards (~55 ms each), which is being looked at separately in bitsocial-react-hooks.

Verification

  • Three new cases in use-popular-posts.test.tsx (waits for still-loading boards instead of the first eight, samples only the top of the ranking in popularity order, stops waiting for a slow board once the box can be filled) fail on master and pass here; all 33 tests in the hook and home view suites pass.
  • Chrome, warm reloads on the dev server: six reloads gave six different sets, all drawn from the sixteen most active boards.
  • yarn lint (including module boundaries), yarn type-check and oxfmt pass; yarn doctor:check reports nothing in the changed files.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Improvements
    • Popular posts are now ranked across eligible boards using time-decayed popularity.
    • Results avoid duplicate links and can include up to eight posts selected from a broader pool of highly ranked content.
    • Deleted, removed, locked, pinned, or invalid-media posts are excluded.
    • Loading can finish sooner when eight candidates are available, while otherwise allowing additional time for boards to load.

The box revealed as soon as eight boards had loaded, and the hooks
library hydrates boards in public-key order, so every visit showed the
same eight boards and the shuffle only reordered them. It also gave a
board with one months-old thread the same chance as the busiest boards.
It now waits for the boards, ranks each board's best thread by the
existing popularity score, and samples eight from the top sixteen on
each page load; once eight threads are available it stops waiting for
boards still loading after 8 s.

📝 Walkthrough

The hook now ranks eligible posts across boards, removes duplicate links, samples up to eight posts from the highest-ranked candidates, and adjusts loading timeouts. Tests cover ranking, deduplication, board loading, and early completion.

Changes: Popular Posts

Layer / File(s) Summary
Rank and sample eligible posts
src/hooks/use-popular-posts.ts, src/hooks/__tests__/use-popular-posts.test.tsx
The hook filters ineligible posts, ranks boards by time-decayed popularity, removes duplicate links, and samples from twice the maximum result count. Cache entries store a fixed scoring timestamp.
Wait for boards before revealing posts
src/hooks/use-popular-posts.ts, src/hooks/__tests__/use-popular-posts.test.tsx
The hook waits up to 30 seconds normally and uses an 8-second timeout when eight candidates are available. Revealed results are frozen. Tests cover unresolved boards, early completion, and result availability.

Comment thread src/hooks/use-popular-posts.ts
Directories dedupe by public key, so an address listed twice reached the ranking twice and the board could contribute its second-best thread too. Repeated addresses are now skipped.
