The home page's Popular Threads and Stats boxes needed every board loaded over P2P before showing anything: about 3.7 s on a warm visit and 5–9 s cold on a fast machine, several times longer on a phone. 4chan renders the same box server-side. This adds stats providers: the boxes first ask one for every board's best thread and stats in a single request, and load over P2P only when no provider answers or the user opts out.

Changes

  • Provider request. GET https://stats.bitsocial.net/api/v1/5chan/boards (added in feat(stats): serve 5chan board stats and popular threads at /api/v1/5chan/boards bitsocial-web#45, now live) returns each board's stats and its single most popular thread. It is fetched once per page load with a 5 s timeout and fails over across the provider list. A snapshot more than an hour old counts as no answer.
  • Popular Threads. The provider's threads are ranked and sampled with the same code as the P2P path, which moves to src/lib/popular-threads.ts.
  • Verification. A thread is shown only if validateComment from bitsocial-react-hooks 0.1.55 accepts it: the comment hashes to its CID, the author signed it, and the board's community signed the update. Its author-signed communityPublicKey must also equal the board's key in 5chan's own directory data, and it must be a top-level post. Signed edits are applied the way pkc-js builds board pages. So a provider can only choose which real threads appear.
  • Stats. The box sums the provider's per-board counts and its heading's tooltip says "Reported by stats.bitsocial.net", since those numbers cannot be verified.
  • Fallback. Both boxes use the existing P2P paths when no provider answers, when the provider has nothing usable for the selected boards, or in pure P2P mode.
  • Settings. A new Stats Providers category lists stats.bitsocial.net. It has a Use pure P2P instead (slow) checkbox, with the tip "Pure P2P stats are always the fallback in case stats providers go down." The new strings are translated into all 35 locales.
  • The new preference key is registered with the static home frame, so the first paint still matches React's first commit.
  • bitsocial-react-hooks goes to 0.1.55: it adds validateComment and hydrates cached boards about three times faster.

Verification

  • Unit tests: the full suite passes (227 files, 2232 tests). New and extended tests cover:
    • provider parsing, failover, error statuses and outdated snapshots;
    • verification (CID/signatures via hooks, board key, replies);
    • edit handling;
    • the provider and fallback paths of both boxes;
    • pure P2P mode;
    • the settings section.
  • yarn agent:verify passes: build, lint, module boundaries, type-check, React Doctor, and 24 runtime scenarios within budget.
  • Chrome, dev server, against the live stats.bitsocial.net:
    • Popular Threads renders at about 0.5 s on fresh navigations, with a different set each reload. Over P2P it took about 3.7 s warm.
    • Stats shows the provider totals with the tooltip.
    • With the endpoint unreachable, both boxes fell back to P2P. With pure P2P checked, no provider request was made.
    • Against a mock built from real signed board data, every thread of a board whose content was tampered with was rejected.
  • Independent review: found that edits were ignored, that replies and outdated snapshots were accepted; all three are fixed here with regression tests.

Known limits

  • Verification proves a thread's update is genuine, not that it is the newest. A provider could replay an older signed update, for example from before a thread was locked.
  • Stats numbers are as the provider reports them.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added configurable statistics providers for homepage totals and popular threads.
    • Added verification for provider-supplied threads, with automatic P2P fallback when data is unavailable or invalid.
    • Added a setting to use pure P2P statistics, with preference persistence.
    • Added a new Stats Providers section in Settings.
  • Localization
    • Added translations for provider settings, fallback behavior, attribution, and loading progress across supported languages.
  • Improvements
    • Improved popular-thread ranking and selection.
    • Improved homepage loading by prefetching statistics when applicable.

The home page's Popular Threads and Stats boxes first ask a stats provider (stats.bitsocial.net) for every board's best thread and stats in one request, instead of loading every board over P2P. Provider threads are shown only when their CID, author and community signatures check out and they belong to the board 5chan expects; stats are labelled as reported by the provider. When no provider answers, or when "Use pure P2P instead (slow)" is checked in the new Stats Providers settings, the boxes load over P2P as before.
0.1.55 adds validateComment, which checks a comment from an untrusted source (its CID, author signature and community signature) before the home page shows a stats provider's thread, and hydrates cached boards about three times faster on a repeat visit.
… snapshots

Provider threads now apply the update's signed edit the way pkc-js builds board pages, so an edited thread shows its edited text and an author-deleted one is left out. A reply listed as a thread fails verification, and a snapshot more than an hour old counts as no answer, so the boxes load over P2P.

📝 Walkthrough

The home page can display statistics and popular threads from a configured provider or use pure-P2P data. The change adds snapshot retrieval, thread verification, ranking utilities, a saved preference and settings panel, provider prefetch, tests, and translations.

Changes: Provider-backed statistics and popular threads

Layer / File(s) Summary
Provider registry and snapshot retrieval
src/lib/stats-providers.ts, src/lib/stats-provider-snapshot.ts, src/lib/__tests__/stats-provider-snapshot.test.ts
Defines provider configuration and snapshot contracts. Validates, fetches, caches, and fails over between provider snapshots.
Popular-thread ranking and verification
src/lib/popular-threads.ts, src/lib/stats-provider-verification.ts, src/hooks/use-popular-posts.ts
Adds shared thread ranking and verification utilities. Provider threads are converted, verified, ranked, and selected.
Provider prefetch and build integration
scripts/vite-stats-provider-prefetch.mjs, scripts/__tests__/vite-stats-provider-prefetch.node-test.mjs, vite.config.js, scripts/vite-static-shell.mjs, vercel.json, package.json
Adds home-page provider prefetch, preference-aware static-shell matching, CSP hashes, and the React hooks dependency update.
Pure-P2P preference and settings
src/stores/use-stats-providers-store.ts, src/components/settings-modal/...
Adds persisted pure-P2P mode and a lazy settings section with provider links and a checkbox.
Home-page display and supporting tests
src/views/home/..., src/hooks/use-promise-result.ts, public/translations/*/default.json
Adds provider-backed statistics and popular-thread rendering with loading and P2P fallback paths. Tests cover provider results, verification, fallback, preference selection, and asynchronous rendering. Translations add the related interface text.

Comment thread src/lib/stats-provider-snapshot.ts
…oon as they arrive

The home page's stats provider request now starts while the app's code downloads, and the popular threads and stats boxes no longer wait behind a Suspense fallback, which React held back for up to 300 ms after the snapshot was ready.
…nloads

The Stats box now reads the provider's stats document, about 8 KB, instead of waiting for the threads, and index.html requests both documents. The 5 s provider timeout now covers only the wait for the provider to start answering: a slow connection could take longer to download a response that started on time, which 5chan then threw away for a P2P load of 9 to 15 s. A download has 15 s.

🟡 Minor · Verify a bounded ranked candidate set before the final pool… · stats-provider-snapshot.ts:185-200

src/lib/stats-provider-snapshot.ts:185-200
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Verify a bounded ranked candidate set before the final pool limit.

selectProviderPopularPosts limits the pool before it calls verifyThread. Invalid high-ranked candidates can therefore consume the pool slots, while valid lower-ranked threads are never checked. Rank each board first, verify a fixed per-board candidate bound, and then apply the existing global pool limit to the verified candidates. If the bound is exhausted before producing a usable provider result, use the existing P2P fallback. Do not slice the raw provider array, because provider order is not the ranking order.
