feat(chain): show a skeleton until the price chart has live candles - #53
chain.bitsocial.net/chart/ drew the committed price history right away, then visibly jumped when GeckoTerminal's newer daily candles arrived.
Change
The chart is drawn hidden under a boneyard skeleton. It is revealed once live candles or an error arrive, or after 5 seconds, so its first view already shows the newest day.
The bones in chain/src/bones are captured from the rendered chart in English at the viewport widths where the panel's layout changes (toolbar rows, era columns, the 40rem query).
Fixes for how boneyard behaves on this page:
The panel frame stays outside the skeleton, because boneyard draws no bones for surfaces.
The chart stays whole inside the skeleton, because boneyard mounts its children one render late.
The panel keeps the chart's real height, so the reveal causes no layout shift.
Bones are mirrored in right-to-left locales.
The pulse is CSS and stops under reduced motion.
New script corepack yarn chart:bones <url> recaptures the bones. It requires the chart's URL on this checkout's dev server and pins lang=en. It goes through pw-session.sh via the perf tooling's withBrowser, which now also passes its CDP URL to the callback.
Dependencies: adds boneyard-js@1.10.0 and a resolution that points its playwright@^1.58.2 range at the repo's existing 1.59.1.
Verification
Headless Chromium, both themes, with GeckoTerminal delayed:
Before the reveal, the hidden legend shows the snapshot's last day. The first visible frame shows the live day.
No panel height change on reveal at 6 widths × 2 viewport heights.
Arabic (RTL) checked.
Fallback paths:
A failed request reveals the snapshot after about 0.6s.
A hung request reveals it after about 5.6s.
Reduced motion stops the pulse.
Repo checks:
yarn agent:verify passed: chain build, doctor:check, and all 9 perf cases within budget.
perf:check --target chain passed again after the withBrowser change.
lint: no new warnings. format:check: no issues in changed files (the remaining issues are in unrelated files).
deps:check-pinned and deps:check-hardened pass. knip reports nothing new.
Chart bundle: +6.7 KB gzip (boneyard runtime plus bones).
Limits
Bones come from the English layout, so in longer locales the toolbar placeholders can be slightly off. The panel height is still exact.
In RTL, the plot/price-axis seam of the canvas placeholder is mirrored to the left.
chart:bones was verified against the plain dev server, not the Portless HTTPS URL.

New Features
Price charts now show a responsive skeleton while live data loads, for up to five seconds, before revealing the chart with the newest day.
The loading animation respects reduced-motion preferences and mirrors appropriately on right-to-left pages.
The /chart/ page drew the committed history first and then visibly jumped when GeckoTerminal's newer candles arrived. The chart is now drawn hidden under a boneyard skeleton, captured from the chart itself, and revealed once live data or an error arrives, or after five seconds, so its first view is already up to date. `yarn chart:bones` recaptures the bones inside the repo's browser slot.

Walkthrough
The chart now displays a responsive skeleton while live data loads, for up to five seconds. A browser-backed script captures chart layouts at configured viewport widths and registers the generated bones for use by the chart.
Adds a chart:bones capture workflow that uses the browser slot, writes responsive chart layouts, and formats the output. The documentation describes the capture and commit workflow.
Registers the chart bones and passes a loading state to PriceChart. The chart displays a configured skeleton while loading, until data arrives or the five-second limit elapses. The styles include reduced-motion and RTL rules.

chart:bones doesn't force English, but the committed bones are documented as English-layout captures. The default URL has no language query param, and withBrowser sets no --lang or context locale. chain/src/lib/i18n.ts detects the language from the query string, then localStorage, then navigator.language. On a fresh capture profile that last step reads the machine locale. A contributor on a German or Japanese system who runs corepack yarn chart:bones gets the toolbar and era buttons wrapping at different widths than the fixed breakpoints (336…1280) assume. price-chart.bones.json is then silently regenerated from a non-English layout.
Suggested fix: pin the language, for example by adding the language query param to the default URL (the key is LANGUAGE_QUERY_PARAM in the chain i18n code), or by setting locale: "en-US" for the capture browser.

`chart:bones` defaulted to the canonical dev host, which in a worktree can serve another checkout's chart, and let the page's language follow the machine's locale. It now takes the URL as a required argument and adds `lang=en` to it.
