In Linux Desktop launcher fails to open Chipmunk when clicked without a file argument #2652
I checked to make sure that this issue has not already been filed
Describe the issue
Title: Desktop launcher fails to open Chipmunk when clicked without a file argument
Description
The Linux .desktop file shipped in crates/app/data/linux/chipmunk.desktop sets the main action to:
Exec=chipmunk files %F
%F is a standard freedesktop.org field code meant to be replaced by a list of files, or removed entirely when no file is being opened (e.g. a plain click on the app icon in a menu/launcher). In that case, the command actually executed becomes:
chipmunk files
But chipmunk files requires at least one path argument:
$ chipmunk files
error: the following required arguments were not provided:
<PATHS>...
Usage: chipmunk files <PATHS>...
For more information, try '--help'.
As a result, launching Chipmunk from an application menu (tested on a Wayland/Niri desktop, likely affects other launchers too) does nothing: the CLI exits with an error instead of opening an empty window.
Steps to reproduce
Build/install Chipmunk 4.3.0 with the provided .desktop file.
Click the Chipmunk icon in an application menu (no file selected).
Nothing happens — the process exits immediately with the error above.
Running chipmunk directly (no subcommand) works fine and opens an empty window.
Expected behavior
Clicking the icon with no file selected should open an empty Chipmunk window, the same as running chipmunk with no arguments.
Suggested fix
Either:
Change the main action's Exec line to Exec=chipmunk %F (drop the files subcommand), relying on chipmunk's default behavior to open a file if one is passed and an empty window otherwise; or
Make <PATHS> optional in the files subcommand, so chipmunk files with no arguments behaves like chipmunk.
The secondary desktop action ("New Empty Window") already uses Exec=chipmunk without files, which works correctly and confirms the fix direction.
Environment
Chipmunk version: 4.3.0
OS: Chimera Linux (musl), Niri (Wayland compositor)
Failure Logs
See in the description
$ chipmunk files
error: the following required arguments were not provided:
<PATHS>...
Usage: chipmunk files <PATHS>...
For more information, try '--help'.
Thanks for reporting the issue and for the fix suggestions.
@itsmesamster Could you please have a look here. I think the fix is simple, but we need to check our Linux installer to ensure the *.desktop file will get replaced with the newer one.
