Folder IDs are not necessarily artist IDs. Treating arbitrary folders as artists made getArtistInfo fail when browsing by folder structure, which could surface an error dialog and suppressed the directory header.
Rendering a folder thumbnail inferred artist status from missing album metadata and called getArtistInfo with a folder ID. That fails in folder browsing and skips the normal child cover art fallback.
