Summary

  • Fail closed when explicit Responses compaction would replace images, files, audio, citations, logprobs, item references, opaque provider compaction state, or other content the text-only summarizer cannot represent.
  • Require prior compaction items to contain valid base64 that decodes to non-empty UTF-8, using one decode helper for validation and rendering so the two paths cannot diverge.
  • For reactive compaction, validate only the historical prefix that replacement discards; multimodal content in the preserved current-turn tail remains supported.
  • Keep retained-memory budget admission ahead of history rendering and tokenization.
  • Add unit, full-proxy, and OpenAI SDK regressions proving rejected content never reaches the summarizer or persistence layer.

Related issue

Closes #1252

Validation

  • Unit tests: cargo test -p praxis-ai-apis --features openai-compact -- compact (177 passed)
  • Integration or functional tests: cargo test -p praxis-tests-integration --features openai-all,store-all --test suite examples::compact:: -- --nocapture (41 passed)
  • Strict focused lint: cargo clippy -p praxis-ai-apis --features openai-compact --all-targets -- -D warnings
  • make lint and repository policy checks (completed by the pre-commit hook)
  • Python SDK test file parsed successfully with python3 -m py_compile; uv was unavailable, so the live SDK test was not run locally.
  • make coverage-check ran the instrumented suites but stopped on three pre-existing FD-limit assertions: ample_limit_is_not_warned, default_raises_soft_limit_to_hard, and max_open_files_sets_the_soft_limit. Accumulated line coverage before that stop was 94.67%.

Checklist

  • I reviewed every changed line and can explain the change.
  • New capabilities include an example config and functional example test. (Not a new capability; existing compact example coverage was extended.)
  • User-facing behavior and generated documentation are updated. (No generated documentation change required.)
  • Performance-sensitive changes include appropriate benchmark or load-test evidence. (String::from_utf8 reuses the decoded allocation; budget admission remains ahead of rendering.)
  • Commits are signed and include a Signed-off-by trailer.

Breaking changes

Requests that previously compacted unsupported or opaque content lossily now fail with HTTP 400 invalid_request_error before summarization or persistence. Text-only compaction behavior is unchanged.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Compaction now rejects unsupported or malformed non-text content with a clear 400 error.
    • Invalid content is rejected before summarization or persistence, preventing unnecessary backend processing.
    • Output text with empty annotations or logprobs is accepted.
    • Unsupported references and items that cannot be represented in the summary are rejected.
    • Reactive compaction validates only history that will be discarded, preserving the current-turn tail; explicit compaction validates all collected messages.
    • Invalid or unrenderable compaction summaries are rejected consistently.

Compaction validates source content before replacing history with a text-only summary. Reactive compaction checks only the history prefix to be replaced. Explicit compaction checks all collected messages before reserving source budget. Unsupported content returns HTTP 400 before summarization.

Explanation

Issue #1252 requires a loss policy before compaction replaces history. The PR implements rejection for non-text parts, semantic text metadata, item references, unknown items, and unrenderable compaction state. It validates the explicit source before summarization and persistence. It validates only the replaced prefix for reactive compaction, so preserved current-turn multimodal content remains supported. Unit, integration, and SDK tests verify HTTP 400 rejection and no summarizer callout or persistence.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The production changes support #1252 by separating explicit collection from validation, source-budget admission, summarization, and persistence, and by sharing compaction-summary decoding between validation and rendering. The added and updated tests cover the rejection policy and replace earlier expectations for items that the text renderer cannot represent. No unrelated change is established.

🟠 Major · Validate the persisted prefix before reactive compaction. · mod.rs:403-404

apis/src/openai/responses/compact/mod.rs:403-404
🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Validate the persisted prefix before reactive compaction.

When rehydrated history contains a hosted-tool item, replay_messages_from_stored can exclude it from state.messages, while build_state retains it in state.persisted_messages. Reactive compaction validates only the prefix of state.messages. It then calls replace_messages, which clears the corresponding persisted prefix. This can silently delete the hosted-tool item from stored conversation history.

Validate the persisted prefix before compaction, or preserve it during replacement. This is separate from rejecting reasoning or hosted-tool items as invalid backend request input.

Suggested fix
 fn validate_reactive_compaction_source(state: &ResponsesState) -> Result<(), FilterAction> {
     let replaced_len = state.messages.len().saturating_sub(state.input.len());

+    validate_compaction_source(state.messages.iter().take(replaced_len))?;

+    validate_compaction_source(state.persisted_messages.iter().take(persisted_replaced_len))

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Handle agentic history before applying the text-only compaction allowlist.

reasoning items enter both replay and persisted history. Reactive compaction validates that history before execute_compaction, so a threshold-triggered request can return HTTP 400 before on_failure: open applies. Explicit compaction loads persisted record.messages and validates every item, so it also rejects reasoning and persisted mcp_list_tools items.

Hosted web_search_call and file_search_call are excluded from replay messages, so they affect explicit compaction only. Either preserve these items before summarization or document and test that compaction is unavailable for histories containing them.
