Diagnose Invisibility: interactive WebView2 report with fixes and 3D preview - #3814
Diagnose Invisibility: interactive WebView2 report with fixes and 3D preview
Description
The output window now renders with WebView2, so Diagnose Invisibility uses that to move from a printed list to an interactive report. This PR also fixes several detection gaps found while testing on the Snowdon Towers sample models.
Interactive report. This mode is used when the output window renders with WebView2 under IronPython. Otherwise the plain printed report remains as the fallback.
Each view gets one card per element, with cause tags, filter chips, search (/) and an overview grid of elements against views.
Each cause has a one-click fix, and each view has "Fix all", which is a single undo step. When a view template controls the setting, the fix changes the template, and the button names that template.
A WebGL 3D preview shows the elements coloured by status. It overlays the section box, crop region, view range planes and section cut/far clip planes. It needs no library and works offline. It reloads after fixes and keeps the camera and layer settings.
Other actions are select, show in Revit, open view and copy as Markdown. The page also has a print stylesheet.
"Ghost in Revit" draws a hidden element translucent in Revit's own views through DirectContext3D (pyrevit.revit.dc3dserver), opens the diagnosed view and zooms to it. The server is removed when the report closes.
Page-to-Python bridge. pyRevit does not listen to WebView2 web messages yet. invisibility_bridge.py therefore subscribes to CoreWebView2.WebMessageReceived on the output window. Handlers run through events.execute_in_revit_context, and replies use PostWebMessageAsJson. Because handlers outlive the command, the bundle now uses engine: clean + persistent, as ColorSplasher does. The bridge finds the WebView2 control by walking the window's logical tree, which is not a public contract. It is written so it could move into pyrevit.output, for example as output.on_message(...), backed by a small C# event on ScriptConsole. #3862 adds that to pyrevit.output and will eliminate invisibility_bridge.py; switching this report over is left to a follow-up PR.
Detection fixes
Crop region. The crop test compared model-space boxes with the view-space CropBox, which was wrong for sections and elevations. It now works in view space. Sections also get new checks for elements behind the cut plane and beyond the far clip.
View filters. The check honours "Enable Filter" and matches the filter's categories, because GetElementFilter() holds rules only. It also handles filters without rules and selection filters. Before this, disabled filters and filters for unrelated categories were reported.
Plan views, elements between the cut plane and the top. These are now reported unless Revit draws them there. That covers family instances of windows, casework and generic models, non-cuttable categories, and families with "Enable Cutting in Views" off. The rule follows About the View Range and was confirmed against Revit 2024's own view collector. Cuttability is read from Category.IsCuttable, so the Revit 2023 change that made Specialty Equipment, Furniture and Plumbing Fixtures cuttable needs no version check.
"Raise cut plane above element". This new fix covers that case, where extending the top did not help. View-range fixes now only move planes outward, so "Fix all" cannot undo itself.
Smaller fixes. Temporary Hide/Isolate is now detected. An "unknown" cause is no longer hidden behind informational notes.
Structure. The checks moved to invisibility_checks.py, which keeps the diagnose_invisibility compatibility wrapper. The fixes, the 3D scene builder, the report session and the bridge each have their own module. The page assets are report.js, viewer3d.js and report.css. New strings are added in all 8 locales; they are machine-translated and could use a native speaker's review.

Additional Notes
Tested on Revit 2024 with IronPython 2.7.12, using the Snowdon Towers Structural sample and a small project:
Report rendering, filters, the overview grid and the 3D previews were checked visually, and the 3D previews also through the bridge.
Select and show worked from the page, and the error path shows a toast.
Every fix was verified in rolled-back transactions, including through the report's handler, which updated the page live. Staged cases: hidden category (view and template), confirmed subcategory, hidden element, Temporary Hide/Isolate, rule-less view filter, crop region, section box, behind cut plane, phase filter, view-specific owner, above cut plane, below view range and discipline.
The far clip check and "Disable far clipping" fix were verified on a real case, Snowdon's Cross Section.
"Fix all" with one fix forced to fail still closes its transaction group and keeps the other fixes.
The ghost was verified through the page: the server registers, the view switches and zooms, and the server is removed on close.
The plain fallback report still works.
Not tested
Revit 2021–2023 and 2025+, where Category.IsCuttable should cover the 2023 cuttability change.
Worksets and design options. The sample is not workshared, and the API cannot create design options.
How the ghost looks on screen. Registration, view switching and zoom were checked through the API, but the Revit window was covered during testing.
The family-level "Enable Cutting in Views" exception, because no such family was at hand.
Fail-closed fixes. If a fix cannot be described, "Fix all" skips it and reports the error, and the single-fix handler refuses to apply it, so a template-owned fix never runs without confirmation.
Review follow-up. The subcategory check now reads the geometry an element draws in the view. It reports a hidden subcategory only when everything the element draws there is hidden, which removes the "Location Lines" noise. When that geometry cannot be read, the old finding remains, marked as speculative and left out of "Fix all".
Screenshots (Snowdon Towers Sample Structural)
Overview: six elements in four views, with cause chips and the elements × views grid.
A templated structural plan. Fixes on settings the template controls are marked "(in template ...)", and the 3D preview shows the view range planes and the crop.
"Raise cut plane above element", before and after. The L2 slab and beams sit between the cut plane and the top. One click makes all six elements visible, and the preview follows.
The Cross Section's far clip, a real case in the sample, and a 3D section box. For the section box shot, the box was temporarily reduced and then rolled back.

"Why can't I see it?" Diagnose Invisibility gets an interactive upgrade
You know the moment: the element is in the model, but not in the view. Analysis > Inspect > Diagnose Invisibility has always told you why. Now it also lets you fix it.
Select the elements, pick one or more views, and you get an interactive report in the pyRevit output window:
Every reason at a glance. You see worksets, phases, design options, hidden categories and subcategories, hidden elements, Temporary Hide/Isolate, view filters, crop region, section box, far clip, view range and more. Filter by cause, search by name or id, and use the overview grid to see which element hides in which view.
One-click fixes. Unhide the category, make the filter visible, expand the section box, disable the crop, raise the cut plane, and so on. "Fix all" repairs a whole view as one undo step. If a view template is in control, the button tells you and fixes the template.
3D preview of the view's clipping. Spin around the elements with the view range planes, cut plane, far clip, crop region or section box drawn in. Red means not visible. You see why instead of reading coordinates.
Plan-view rules that match Revit. Elements between the cut plane and the top are correctly reported as hidden unless they are windows, casework, generic models or not cuttable. This also covers the 2023 change to Specialty Equipment and Furniture. One click on "Raise cut plane above element" brings them back.
Select or zoom to any element from the report, open the view, or copy the whole diagnosis as Markdown for a coordination email.
It works in any language pyRevit supports, and it uses the output window's new WebView2 renderer. On machines without the WebView2 runtime you still get the classic printed report. Feedback welcome, especially from Revit 2021–2023 and 2025+ users!
### Issue 1
extensions/pyRevitTools.extension/pyRevit.tab/Analysis.panel/Tools.stack/Inspect.pulldown/Diagnose Invisibility.pushbutton/invisibility_scene.py:88-91
`add_polyline` adds every edge point without checking the geometry budget. Curves and polylines never increase `vertex_count`, so a large selection can bypass both limits and send an oversized preview to the browser. Count edge points toward the element and scene limits, and use the bounding-box fallback when either limit is reached.
### Issue 2
extensions/pyRevitTools.extension/pyRevit.tab/Analysis.panel/Tools.stack/Inspect.pulldown/Diagnose Invisibility.pushbutton/invisibility_scene.py:373-381
`_section_overlays` adds the crop box only when far clipping is enabled, without checking `CropBoxActive`. A cropped section with no far clipping therefore loses its crop outline. A section with its crop disabled can show an inactive boundary instead. Draw the crop outline based on `CropBoxActive`, separately from the far-clip plane.
### Issue 3
extensions/pyRevitTools.extension/pyRevit.tab/Analysis.panel/Tools.stack/Inspect.pulldown/Diagnose Invisibility.pushbutton/report.js:99-101
In a single-view report, fixing the last cause selected by a filter chip can leave the repaired card hidden. `renderView` applies the old filter first. `renderHeader` then removes the now-empty cause from `activeCodes`, but `renderMatrix` returns without applying filters again for one view. Apply filters after updating the chips so the cards match the displayed filter state.

For each issue above, determine whether it is valid and should be fixed. If so, fix it directly.

Walkthrough
The Diagnose Invisibility tool now checks more visibility conditions, provides repair actions, and presents an interactive WebView2 report with a 3D preview. It also retains a plain-report path when the interactive renderer is unavailable.
Changes: Invisibility diagnosis and interactive report
The diagnosis pipeline checks worksets, phases, design options, visibility settings, clipping, view ranges, view-specific ownership, templates, and discipline. It returns findings with optional fixes and supports a legacy message-and-code wrapper.
Fix handlers update view or template settings, adjust clipping and view ranges, or navigate to an owner view. Model changes run in named Revit transactions with rollback and error handling.
The entry point uses the interactive report when the WebView2 renderer is available and otherwise prints a plain report. The report session handles diagnosis, selection, navigation, fixes, rechecks, and scene requests through a WebView2 message bridge. Bundle settings, tooltips, and localized report strings were added.

The report UI renders findings and supports filtering, navigation, fixes, and 3D scene interaction. Scene generation provides meshes and view overlays; the WebGL2 viewer renders and supports camera controls, highlighting, and picking.

Review findings:
- count edge points toward the 3D preview geometry budget
- section preview draws the crop outline from CropBoxActive, independent
of far clipping
- re-apply card filters after a view refresh so fixed cards reappear
- Fix all skips speculative findings and always closes its transaction

Subcategory check now reads the geometry an element draws in the view and
reports a hidden subcategory only when everything it draws there is
hidden. This removes "Location Lines"-style noise and catches elements
the view collector still lists (e.g. columns drawn only as Stick Symbols).
Unreadable geometry falls back to the old, now speculative, finding.
New "Ghost in Revit" toggle draws the element through DirectContext3D
(pyrevit.revit.dc3dserver), opens the diagnosed view and zooms to it; the
server is removed when the report closes.
Also: tooltip and count for "Show context notes", base64-packed preview
geometry and a lower point budget (500-beam preview 27 s -> 12 s), new
strings in all 8 locales.

_on_fix now re-diagnoses the element and runs the matching fix instead of

It reports a hidden subcategory only when everything the element draws there is hidden, which removes the "Location Lines" noise.
