Summary

  • Rename icon to leadingIcon on Badge, Callout, SidePanel.Header and DataViewField, and icon/trailing to leadingIcon/trailingIcon on Editor slash items and Editor/PromptInput mention items, so every component uses one name for an icon prop.

  • Add trailingIcon to Select.Item and Combobox.Item, and widen FilterChip leadingIcon from ReactElement to ReactNode.

  • Rename the leading-icon slots that ended in -icon to <part>-leading-icon: announcement-bar, badge, callout, combobox-item, select-item, select-value and tabs-tab.

  • Add slotProps to every component that has classNames, with the same part names. Each entry takes that part's props and merges with classNames (both class names apply, handlers chain). classNames is marked @deprecated and still works.

  • Update docs (props tables, Slots tables, demos), the upgrading page, the Figma templates and the docs app's own classNames usages.

  • I have followed the pull request section of the contributing guide.

Breaking changes

The renamed props and data-slot values. Old -> new mappings are in the new "icon props and slotProps" section of upgrading.mdx.

Decisions where the proposal was silent

  • slotProps is on the 11 components that have classNames today (DataTable skipped): Indicator, Input, EmptyState, Table.SectionHeader, Sidebar.Item, Sidebar.Group, Sidebar.More, DataView.List, DataView.List columns, DataView.Timeline and DataView.Filters. Keys match the classNames keys, including root keys and Sidebar.Group icon.
  • Merge order is internal props, then classNames, then slotProps (Base UI mergeProps). For DataView.List cells, the column's slotProps wins over the List's.
  • Sidebar.More menuContent takes Menu.Content props. Its classNames.menuContent is now deprecated too.
  • DataView column styles is also marked @deprecated, since slotProps.cell.style covers it.
  • Parts with an internal ref (DataView parts) type their slot props without ref. Input container and Sidebar.Item text merge the refs.
  • SidePanel.Header has no wrapper around the icon, so no slot was added. DataViewField.leadingIcon is still not rendered anywhere (see DataView filters: support icons on select options (and use field.icon) #942).
  • Editor slash items get leadingIcon only. Their trailing content stays the shortcut keys.
  • Select.Value shows the selected item's leading icon only, as before.
  • Internal classNames usages (Command.Input, FilterChip) now pass slotProps.

Likely conflicts with other open PRs

Checks run

  • pnpm lint, pnpm exec tsc --noEmit in packages/react and pnpm test:apsara (197 files, 3742 tests) pass.
  • Compared the docs pages for Badge, Callout, SidePanel, Tabs, AnnouncementBar, FilterChip, EmptyState, Indicator, Input, Table, Sidebar, Command, Select, Combobox, Editor, PromptInput and DataView (index, List, Timeline) against apsara.raystack.org, in light and dark themes. The only visible change is the new trailing icon in the Select and Combobox icon demos.

📝 Walkthrough

The changes standardize icon prop and slot names around leadingIcon and trailingIcon, add trailing icons to Combobox and Select items, and add typed slotProps customization to several components and DataView. Existing styling APIs remain available in several components. Documentation, examples, and tests reflect the updated APIs.

Qualify the leading-icon slot rule.

SidePanel.Header renders leadingIcon without a wrapper or data-slot in packages/react/components/side-panel/side-panel.tsx at Line 70. A reader following this rule will target a selector that does not exist. Limit the rule to components that expose a leading-icon slot, and note the exception.

Render trailingIcon for JSX item content.

If a Combobox.Item has JSX children, the non-string branch returns only children. It drops the supplied trailingIcon. Render the trailing icon after either form of item content, or document and enforce a string-only constraint.

Merge caller container props with the command input class.

If a caller passes CommandInput slotProps={{ container: { title: 'Search' } }}, the later {...props} replaces this slotProps object. The rendered Input loses styles.commandInputContainer. Extract the caller’s slotProps and merge its container props and class name with the internal container props before rendering Input.

Make slot-only row actions keyboard-accessible.

When a consumer supplies slotProps.row.onClick without onRowClick, the row remains unfocusable and receives no activation key handler. Keyboard users cannot perform that row action. Include the slot click handler in the row’s focus and keyboard-activation conditions.
